The Dance -
List Price: $18.98
Amazon Price: $6.90
Used Price: $0.10

| Fleetwood Mac's 1997 reunion could have been the kind of event that works on video--great concert, after all--but ends up not paying off in repeated listenings on CD. But The Dance, while concentrating on the group's '70s and '80s triumphs, finds the Mac energy running high and impassioned. New songs like "Temporary One" and "Bleed to Love Her" are fine additions to the canon, while "Everywhere" and "Say You Love Me" both breeze along the way you remember them and manage a reinvention in the live setting. The dark side of the vision is accounted for with Lindsey Buckingham's crazed solo "Big Love," but best of all is "Silver Springs," wherein Stevie Nicks tears the roof off the sucker and sets fire to the rubble. --Rickey Wright

Dead Can Dance - Toward The Within -
List Price: $14.98
Amazon Price: $8.97
Used Price: $10.11

| There are few voices in popular music like that of Dead Can Dance's Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard. Perry's is rich and earthy, whereas Gerrard's multi-octave instrument is, at times, downright unearthly. Toward the Within, the audiovisual version of a 1993 concert at Santa Monica's Mayfair Theatre--chosen, no doubt, for its excellent acoustics--is a fine showcase for their unique talents. Joined by five musicians on keyboards, strings, and percussion, Mark Magidson (Baraka) has filmed the proceedings in a straightforward manner, but the music is intricate and exotic enough that no special effects or fancy camera moves are necessary. The songs, which incorporate pop, folk, and world-music influences, are interspersed with interview clips, turning the release into a hybrid between a concert video and a documentary. Highlights include the hypnotic "Rakim" and soaring "American Dreaming." Toward the Within was also issued on CD, sans the interview and video clips. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Shakra's Industrial Strength Dance Workout - Tribal Bellydance, World Fusion -
List Price: $14.98
Amazon Price: $7.75
Used Price: $8.63

| Assertive and futuristic in its spirit, the workout is propelled by the driving rhythms of Gothic/Industrial music featuring :wumpscut:, Decoded Feedback, Terrorfakt, Maduro, The Last Dance, and Collide. Workout 1 (45 min.) opens with a cardio section and proceeds through a series of dynamic stretches and isolations toward Transfusion Dance steps that get progressively bigger and faster. Workout 2 (25 min.) jumps straight into hard-hitting moves of the pure Shakra transfusion style, building to a faster tempo through sequences of steps. Following the workouts, the program offers an instructional section where Na la, Bronwen, and Hilary of Shakra teach 2 Transfusion dance combinations and practice them at accelerating tempos. Shakra dancers use the system of gears to cue switching between tempos in the workouts and combinations. 1st Gear is normal speed, on the beat of the music; 2nd gear is double time; 3rd gear is twice as fast as 2nd; and Overdrive doubles the 3rd gear. The gear system effectively manages the accelerating tempos of the dance, giving the program a great flow. In addition the Industrial Strength Dance Workout offers Safety Tips and a special Technique section breaking down Transfusion Dance techniques and isolations in depth.

Save the Last Dance (2001 Film) -
List Price: $13.98
Amazon Price: $9.00
Used Price: $1.29

| Julia Stiles (The Devil's Own) and Sean Patrick Thomas (Cruel Intentions) star in this romantic musical drama about an interracial couple drawn past cultural barriers and united by music and dance. The soundtrack has no shortage of notable R&B and hip-hop performers. However, as the title Save the Last Dance implies, this is primarily a platform for the art of the slow dance. Rappers Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and the late Notorious B.I.G. (featured as part of 112's track, "Only You") represent the harder end of the spectrum (however, Snoop is paired with Q-Tip and Lucy Pearl for a smoother ride than usual). But the dramatic shuffle of the soundtrack's first single, K-Ci & Jo-Jo's "Crazy," represents the best of what's offered here. Pink's playful "You Make Me Sick" and Donnell Jones's "U Know What's Up" are among the other tuneful highlights. --Rob O'Connor

Dance with My Father -
List Price: $13.98
Amazon Price: $3.94
Used Price: $1.03

| Given Luther Vandross's precarious state of health at the time of its release, Dance With My Father?s title track--a tale of yearning for a lost loved one--takes on added poignancy. It?s something of a centerpiece on an album that moves in several directions, reaching for varied constituencies, while ultimately staying focused on Vandross?s trademark buttery vocals. In addition to "Dance," there?s more adult-contemporary balladry ("Buy Me a Rose"), lightly sassy soul ("If I Didn?t Know Better"), and a number of collaborations with hip-hoppers that often work surprisingly well. While suspending disbelief is hard when considering Luther and Foxy Brown as a couple ("If It Ain?t One Thing"), remakes of soft-R&B classics with Beyonce Knowles and Busta Rhymes prove to be highlights. With the Destiny?s Child singer, Vandross actually improves on the familiar Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway take of "The Closer I Get to You," turning in a cut that recalls his slow-burning signature reworking of "A House is Not a Home." A languid turn at "Lovely Day," with a purring Busta, works almost as well. (The "Part II" remix is superfluous, however.) Otherwise, Dance is in the vein of post-?80s Vandross discs, and guaranteed to please fans. --Rickey Wright
