About Time! Definitive Mod-Pop Collection 1966-68 -
List Price: $19.98
Amazon Price: $13.85
Used Price: $14.62

| Making up the four great bands of the 1966 pop-apocalypse were The Who, The Action, The Creation and finally The Attack. Four names that in their brevity summed up the instant flash of mod-pop appeal. They had more energy than an H-bomb after flash, and they hit the senses and the soul with a long awaited wake up call. A definitive collection, which includes such stand outs as - Try It "bugged out insanity, with sexual overtones blowing the Standells version into oblivion"; We Don't Know "a tight explosion of mod-soul" ; Anymore Than I Do "a freak beat classic" - plus of course their pre-Jeff Beck version of Hi Ho Silver lining. A Must for all Mod Collectors. Includes for the first time on CD all four Decca singles. Includes previously unreleased material. Special Phil Smee package. Sample track on April issue of Mojo cover mount.

Pop Trash -
List Price: $17.98
Amazon Price: $12.00
Used Price: $5.20

| Imagine how startling it must be for Simon LeBon and Nick Rhodes to realize that the older sector of once devoted, poster-kissing Duranies have aged enough to be soccer moms. The last two remaining members of the '80s superband hit and often missed throughout the '90s, but with Pop Trash, grown-up fans will find a reinvigorating pop album that strikes a nearly perfect balance between hip factor and maturity. The band backpedals from the overtaxing techno of the 1997 sleeper release Medazzaland, but retains a few well-chosen synth overlays and combines them successfully with the oceanic balladry from 1993's The Wedding Album. "Someone Else Not Me" and "Pop Trash Movie" reclaim the beautiful soundscapes of The Wedding Album's "Ordinary World," while the heavier tracks work diet industrial ("Mars Meets Venus") and heavy-metal riffs with weird time signatures ("Last Day on Earth") into proper Duran Duran bombast. There are moments when the band overruns the age-appropriate mark: "Lady Xanax," an ode to the anxiety-relieving medication, symbolizes a tempering of their fast and furious lifestyle, but then again, who has time for street drugs when you have to get the kids home in time for dinner? --Beth Massa

Never Never Love -
List Price: $15.98
Amazon Price: $5.33
Used Price: $3.70

| 2008 sophomore album from this Pop (no pun intended) singer/songwriter and former Ladytron member, probably the only contemporary musician in the world beloved of both Jarvis Cocker and Noel Gallagher. Recorded entirely in Hollywood at Quincy Jones' old studio, Westlake, where both Thriller & Off The Wall were laid down, Mr. Levi has returned with an album about the madness of love - 100% autobiographical, 100% clever, 100% dumb, 100% unique. And that's giving 400% already. From transitional rockers like 'Wannamama' and 'Oh God,' Pop spreads his wings, relying on a production flare, which makes the record feel fresh and slick as well as charmingly hi-lo-fi. 'Never Never Love' shows that while he hasn't abandoned the dynamics of the Rock group he has also been steeping himself in contemporary R&B. Flamboyant, utterly self-confident, completely his own man and so uninterested in the back and forth of fashion that everything he makes is an instant classic, Pop Levi is in the building. Bow down and give thanks. Counter.

Thai Pop Spectacular: 1960s-1980s -
List Price: $17.98
Amazon Price: $13.99

| Thai pop history has been largely ignored and neglected by the international musical community for far too long. By the late 20th century, Thai pop music had developed as many faces as localized roots music such as molam or styles like luk thung or luk krung (each with their own respective pop-sectors). Bangkok -- always the hub of the Thai recording industry -- attracted musicians and singers from across the country that were both informed by tradition and inspired by the wealth of international sounds entering the region via radio and phonograph. Jazz, for instance, had a profound influence on early Thai pop music, the King of Thailand himself being a noted jazz composer. This superb collection features modern Thai music styles combining with elements of surf, rock, funk, disco and comedy, revealing the use of clever instrumentation, brilliant vocals, great arrangements, twisted breaks, and resourceful production techniques. Discover the Queen of Luk Thung, the 1960s "Shadow Music" sound, classic tracks from Thai films, blazing examples of Bangkok disco from the 1970s, legendary Thai comedy pop, and the most outrageous version of "The Night Chicago Died" you'll ever encounter. Thick horn sections, wah-wah guitars, tight drums, and funky organs help round out this astounding set which proves beyond a doubt that the Thai were a completely unique and powerful force during the 1960s, '70s & '80s global popular music explosion.
