Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection -
List Price: $19.98
Amazon Price: $8.66
Used Price: $6.80

| While many of their peers were abandoning '70s metal and arena rock to hop the punk/new wave bandwagon, Def Leppard smartly stripped the earlier era's music of its excesses, bolstered it with energetic, pop-savvy hooks and quickly found itself the vanguard of the UK's new metal revival and one of the '80s most spectacularly successful rock acts. The first disc of this 35-track, two-and-a-half hour double-disc retrospective focuses on the familiar hits of their early MTV, platinum-selling prime, though the inclusion of the video edit/remixes of "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Rocket" attempts to cast them in a more club-friendly contemporary groove. But the grittier second disc showcases some of the early, overlooked roots of On Through the Night and High 'N' Dry, as well as underappreciated later gems like '99's "Promises" and a power-pop-perfect take on Badfinger's "No Matter What" from an upcoming covers project. --Jerry McCulley

The Moody Blues - A Night at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra -
List Price: $19.98
Amazon Price: $9.12
Used Price: $9.11

| A Night at Red Rocks, taped in Colorado's gorgeous natural amphitheater in 1992, is an ambitious undertaking for these still-stomping rock dinosaurs: the classic Moody Blues lineup playing with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and no safety net. The band rises to the occasion, giving fans a solid if sentimental survey of its long and prosperous career. The performances and the material vary in quality, but the group comes through where it counts. Hits like "The Voice," "The Story in Your Eyes," and "Nights in White Satin" sound great, as does "Question," the Moodys' greatest contribution to rock music. The Symphony plays well, but the group misses some prime opportunities to use it, adhering to synth parts where an orchestra would have worked nicely (most notably in the rocking "Gemini Dream"). There's no surround mix here, but band leaders Justin Haywood and John Lodge deserve kudos for their able sound mixing. --Michael Mikesell

Punk Rock Christmas -
List Price: $11.98
Amazon Price: $7.37
Used Price: $7.32

| This is not your father's Christmas music. Or even your little sister's Backstreet Boys sugarplum-fairy dream dancing in her head. But it is a galvanizing collection of 18 cuts deep in the heart of the season, by some of the finest punk bands from rock's '70s and '80s days of rage. As much a profile of the legendary bands that made the music world safe for alternative rock a decade later, Punk Rock Xmas withstands the decibels of time with a number of outstanding performances. The Dickies rant and rave on "Silent Night" and Stiff Little Fingers reprise "White Christmas" with a vengeance, while blokes from the Sex Pistols and Thin Lizzy called the Greedies turn out a blistering "Merry Jingle." Fear spit out a nasty four-letter sentiment that's 45 seconds short, the Ramones weigh in with "Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight)," and Mojo Nixon, El Vez, and sundry others gleefully reinvent and deconstruct the sound and wounds of the season. A real stocking ripper. --Martin Keller

Selections 1976-1988 -
List Price: $24.98
Amazon Price: $18.89
Used Price: $16.32

| Of course they're preachy--that's what preachers do. The long-running black women's a cappella group (plus an extra member who signs the songs in American Sign Language) is absolutely serious about their historically researched narratives of women and liberation: the struggle against oppression is serious business. But Bernice Johnson Reagon and the group she's led since 1973 also sing like the angels, with harmonies drawn from black American gospel and African traditional music, and when their voices fall to a charged hush, wailing and humming in solidarity, they're incredibly powerful. Selections draws on the group's first eight albums, including their long-out-of-print second disc, and it's almost all richly soulful and uplifting. --Douglas Wolk

Experience...101 -
List Price: $17.98
Amazon Price: $11.66
Used Price: $7.95

| "I can see the children dancing and singing and laughing when they hear Experience...101. " - Maya Angelou Sweet Honey in the Rock, the world-renowned, award-winning female African American ensemble, which performs a cappella (except for hand percussion), joins the Appleseed label for a delightfully buoyant and positive new CD aimed at teaching kids some of life's basic lessons in 18 exuberant, non-preachy songs. The joyful sound of six magically interwoven voices and upbeat advice - utilizing folk, gospel, jazz, blues and even rap styles - will appeal to children and parents alike. The CD's colorful packaging - an eyecatching digipack and a 16-page booklet in the style of a school composition notebook - contributes to the theme of learning through music. Children from the ages of 9 to 12 pose questions about the mysteries of the adult world in print, and the members of Sweet Honey (six vocalists at the time of this recording, now five, not counting their onstage sign language interpreter) respond with songs of about peaceful coexistence, the virtues of education, the nurturing support and reassurance of parents and elders, following one's moral and spiritual compass, and working to better the surrounding world. Emphasizing the group's roots in African culture, the songs are matched up in print to Adinkra symbols used in Ghana, West Africa, to indicate wisdom, strength, unity, good fortune, harmony and other emotions crucial to leading a meaningful life. The sound of Sweet Honey is almost intoxicating, as they deploy their voices in myriad combinations and styles - call-and-response, scatting, percolating percussive effects, waterfalls of harmonies and counterpoints, rounds, spoken rap-like segments, and just about every other pleasing way the human voice can be utilized.
